Types of Motivation

Motivation comes in two distinct flavors: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation involves engaging in activities that spark joy or deeply reward you, reflecting a natural aspect of human behavior.

It’s when you pour your heart into a project, not just for the paycheck, but because it resonates with your core beliefs and passions. This drive often leads to more satisfaction and meaningful achievements, fueled by what truly matters to you, and fosters positive emotions.

Then, there’s extrinsic motivation, which focuses on external rewards and recognition. For instance, you might grow your business to win an award or hit a financial target.

Extrinsic motivation can push and help you achieve short-term goals, but it might lack the deeper fulfillment intrinsic motivation provides.

Knowing these two types of motivation is crucial for us. It influences how we plan our paths, shape our personal goals, and react to opportunities and challenges. It’s about aligning with our deeper motivations and using this understanding to steer our actions.

Emotions do more than let us feel. They also reflect our cognitive processes. These involve how our brain handles information, feelings, and responses, forming a core part of human nature. 

For instance, basic emotions, such as joy, fear, and frustration, play a big part in our decisions and actions. Happiness can inspire us to pursue new opportunities and challenges enthusiastically. 

On the other hand, fear, particularly the kind we feel when facing a tight deadline, activates our sympathetic nervous system. It’s one of the two parts of the autonomic nervous system and works like our body’s natural alarm, gearing us up for quick thinking and action. 

They connect what we aim to do with our feelings, impacting our choice to engage or avoid. Learning to master our emotions effectively gives us the momentum to take the next step or reach our goals.

Tips on Finding and Sustaining Motivation 

Discovering Your Motivation

  • Self-Reflection. Reflect on moments of joy and achievement. What tasks or activities have made you feel fulfilled? These reflections can reveal your intrinsic motivators. Notice how your emotional/facial expressions change during these activities. A smile or a look of intense focus can indicate what truly motivates you.
  • Trial and Error. Experiment with new activities. Each unique experience can offer insights into what excites and drives you.
  • Seek Inspiration. Look to role models or mentors. Their journeys might spark ideas about what could motivate you.
  • Connect with Your Values. Identify your core values and explore activities that align with them. This often leads to natural, positive, emotion-driven motivation.
  • Listen to Feedback. Sometimes, others can see our potential before we do. Be open to feedback, as it might guide you towards unexpected motivational paths.

Maintaining Motivation

  • Create Routines. Develop daily routines or habits that reinforce your goals.
  • Track progress. Record your accomplishments, no matter how small. Seeing progress can be a huge motivational booster.

Sometimes, it’s about revisiting and refining your objectives to ensure they resonate with your passions and aspirations.

Procrastination

Procrastination, another frequent obstacle, is usually a sign of deeper issues like fear of failure or being overwhelmed by the task. Addressing these underlying fears, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and setting up a supportive work environment can help overcome procrastination. 

Sometimes, motivation is about creating a space where focus comes naturally and distractions are minimized.

External Distractions

Speaking of distractions, our environment and social circles play significant roles in our motivation levels. Surrounding yourself with supportive people and crafting an environment that aligns with your goals can create a positive reinforcement loop. 

This could mean setting up a dedicated workspace free from mess or spending time with people who inspire and motivate you.
